Particle board has several disadvantages, including:
- Low strength
Particle board is not as strong as other fiberboards and cannot support heavy loads. - Susceptible to moisture
Particle boards swell and warp when exposed to moisture, even in small amounts. This can cause the veneer layer to crack and warp, cabinet doors to stop closing, and shelves to not fit properly. - Limited durability
Particle boards have a shorter lifespan than medium-density fiberboard and plywood. It’s less suitable for applications that require long-term strength and durability. - Contains formaldehyde
Some particle laminated boards emit formaldehyde, a potential carcinogen. However, low-formaldehyde particle boards are available. - Thin veneer layer
The surface of particle board can be easily damaged during normal use. The thin melamine (plastic) veneer layer can break or crack. - Can promote mould and mildew growth
Constant exposure to water and moisture can promote the growth of mold and mildew, which can further damage the board and create health hazards. - Discoloration
Particle board can discolor under extreme conditions.
